What is Vinyasa Yoga?

Vinyasa Yoga is one of four yoga classes available at Richmond Hill Health Club each week. This class is the next step on your yoga journey. Rather than learning more basic core yoga poses, this session will build upon your understanding of yoga. Otherwise known as 'flow,' this style of yoga trains you to link your breath with each fluid movement, creating a dance-like exercise. Unlike more traditional types of yoga, Vinyasa can be adapted and creatively altered into different sequences, making it perfect for tailoring to individual abilities.

What are the benefits of Vinyasa Yoga?

Physical

  • Strengthens the entire body and stabilises the core.

  • Through the dance-like sequences, it burns calories and tones muscles.

  • Gently improves flexibility through flowing movements.

  • Low-risk, low-impact movements help increase mobility and reduce strain on joints.

  • While Vinyasa Yoga counts as a mild workout, through continuous movement, the heart rate elevates and improves circulation over time.

  • Through poses such as planks, upward-facing dog, and warrior pose, yoga can help build and tone all muscle groups in fluid sequences.

Mental

  • While focusing on breath and alignment of the body, the mind is trained to stay present, calm, and to reduce stress.

  • Alongside the relaxation that is instilled through flow yoga, mood is also boosted by the release of happy hormones, like endorphins.

  • Regular yoga practice is a helpful form of self-care that helps to release tension and relax the body, which can help you regulate in future stressful situations and even improve sleep.

  • You will learn discipline and consistency, which are important if you want to feel the full benefits of yoga.

FAQ

  • What types of yoga classes do you offer?

Alongside Foundation Yoga, we have Vinyasa yoga, Hatha yoga, and Rocket yoga classes. All yoga classes are designed to support your fitness journey and find some inner peace.

  • What is the difference between Vinyasa Yoga and Foundation Yoga?

Foundation Yoga is more focused on learning the key principles of Yoga, the basic postures, breathing and alignment. Whereas Vinyasa is performed based on that prior knowledge and is faster paced, more dynamic and is practised with flowing movements rather than individual postures.

  • Do I need to bring any equipment?

Our yoga studio is fully equipped with yoga mats and everything else you will need. You may want to have a water bottle nearby to stay hydrated throughout the class and a towel if you would like.

  • Can Vinyasa Yoga help with weight loss?

While Vinyasa Yoga may not have fast results like cardio, it is definitely a great light exercise to support weight loss as it elevates your heart rate, burns calories and stimulates circulation for a healthy metabolism.

  • Do I need yoga experience to join a Vinyasa class?

Not necessarily. You might benefit from our Foundation Yoga class to learn the basics of postures, alignment and breathing, but you can definitely start Vinyasa as a beginner. Your instructor will ensure you are getting the best out of the class, whether you are a seasoned yogi or a beginner.

  • Is Vinyasa Yoga similar to Pilates classes?

Pilates shares some similarities with Vinyasa Yoga, in the sense that they are both low-impact means of exercise, strengthen the core and influence mindful practices and body awareness. However, Vinyasa yoga is more focused on meditation and breath practice that flows between movements, whereas pilates is more structured, repetitive and precise.
